John Inverdale presents live BBC Two coverage as Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium plays host to its first Aviva British Grand Prix, following a switch from its traditional home of Gateshead.
The north-east venue provided some memorable highlights throughout the years, including Asafa Powell’s 100m world record-equalling run of 9.77 seconds in 2006; now it’s the turn of England’s second city to create its own history for the event.
This season’s meeting is the ninth stop of the Diamond League tour and the competition will be intense as athletics biggest stars take over Birmingham.
Phillips Idowu, Christine Ohuruogu, Andreas Thorkildsen, Carmelita Jeter and Sanya Richards-Ross are just some of the big names so far to join the star-studded line-up, but all eyes are currently on the re-match of Asafa Powell versus Tyson Gay, the contest that set the Aviva British Grand Prix alight in 2010 and was one of the races of the season.
What’s more, Jamaican and American athletes will be keen to acquaint themselves with a city they are bound for the following year, when Birmingham becomes the pre-Olympic holding camp for both the USA and Jamaican teams.
Live coverage of the Aviva Birmingham Grand Prix is on Sunday 10th July from 5.30pm on BBC Two.
