BBC Two will broadcast live coverage of the Bupa Great Manchester Run on Sunday 15th May. The race had been billed to feature Paula Radcliffe’s long-awaited race comeback, however she has since pulled out due to a recent illness.
The event, now in its eighth year, is expected in to see 38,000 people take to the streets as competitors pass several of the city’s most notable landmarks. Ethiopian great Haile Gebrselassie is the star attraction in the men’s race. The 38-year-old runner has won the elite men’s race three times, including snatching the title for the last two years. The two-time Olympic 10,000m gold medallist contemplated retirement last year but quickly changed his mind, much to the relief of his army of fans.
Gebrselassie’s compatriot Worknesh Kidane is the defending champion in the women’s event. Four-time men’s champion David Weir and three-time women’s winner Shelly Woods also compete in the wheelchair races.
The Bupa Great Manchester Run is Britain’s premier 10k and was first staged in 2003. Jonathan Edwards presents the BBC Two live coverage between 10am – 12noon with commentary from Steve Cram and Paul Dickenson.
