Channel 5 will broadcast live coverage of the 21st Bupa Great South Run from Southsea, Portsmouth on Sunday, October 24 as 23,500 runners complete across a flat 10 mile course.
One of the most popular races of its kind in Europe, the event is set against the backdrop of Britain’s naval heritage and passes local sights including HMS Victory and the Mary Rose.
Since the inception of the event in 1990, the Great South Run has become one of Europe’s foremost road races. It is the only ten-mile race in the world to win coveted IAAF Gold Label status this year. The Gold Label judges events against several criteria, including organisation, safety and the number of elite athletes involved.
Last year’s race saw Paula Radcliffe set a British record time of 51 minutes and 11 seconds. The men’s race was won by Kenyan Bernard Kipyego in a time of 46 minutes 43 seconds.
This year the race features the debut of hotly-tipped 26-year-old Mo Farah, the current European Indoor 3,000m champion. The Somalian-born British runner, based in Twickenham, will be making his first appearance in a ten-mile international race. Other elite runners confirmed for the event include last year’s runner-up, Martin Fagan, and two-time world marathon champion Catherine Ndereba.
Among the celebrities due to participate in this year’s event are Iwan Thomas, the 400m Olympic medallist and comedian Hugh Dennis, star of ‘Mock the Week’ and ‘Outnumbered’. Jake Wood, better known as Max Branning in ‘EastEnders’, and former EastEnder and ‘I’m a Celebrity…’ winner Joe Swash will also be taking to the field, alongside Lee McQueen of ‘The Apprentice’ and Peter Storrie, chairman of Portsmouth football club.
Coverage on Channel 5 commences at 10:30 and is presented by former 400m champion Katharine Merry.

Channel 5 coverage is hopeless! you are not showing enough of the British interests. If this was anywhere else in the world they would see their home athletes.
