The BBC will broadcast two thrilling days of world-class athletics on 5 – 6 August as Crystal Palace plays host to the London Grand Prix – the 12th of the season’s 14 Samsung Diamond League meetings.
As part of the prestigious Samsung Diamond League, a series of the top 14 Grand Prix meets from around the world, athletics fans can expect the competition to be fierce and the atmosphere electric as the sports biggest names clash on the track and field. With the World Championships in South Korea coming up at the end of the month, this is ideal preparation for some of the world’s biggest names.
Starting on the Friday night, the men’s 100m will feature 2011’s fastest man Asafa Powell, exactly a year to the day that he may be lining up on the big stage in the same city. Powell lines up against British European and Commonwealth silver medallist Mark Lewis-Francis and former World champion Kim Collins.
World number one hurdler David Oliver leads an all-star cast in the fiercely competitive 110m hurdles competition, while home-favourite Jenny Meadows lines up in the 800m.
European champion and European record holder Mo Farah will compete in the 3,000m. Farah is in fantastic form having secured victory in outstanding fashion at the Aviva Birmingham Grand Prix, as well as breaking the British record at the Monaco leg of the Samsung Diamond League.
On Saturday, amongst those in action are Britain’s triple jump world champion Phillips Idowu, Olympic 400m champion Christine Ohuruogu, and 400m hurdler Dai Greene, who has set his sights on Kriss Akabusi’s long-standing British record. There is also the women’s 1500m to look forward to, featuring Britain’s Lisa Dobriskey, while the world’s best sprinters line up in the women’s 100m.
BBC coverage is presented by John Inverdale, with expert analysis from Colin Jackson and Denise Lewis.
