The 42nd staging of the ING New York City Marathon 2011 takes place on Sunday 6 November with live coverage on British Eurosport 2 from 2pm. The event draws 45,000 runners from all over the world, attracts more than 2 million spectators and is broadcast internationally.
The route for the NYC Marathon 2011 is 26.2 miles across the five boroughs of Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Manhattan, crossing five bridges before coming to an end in Central Park.
A trio of champions are set to return to this year’s race, including 2010 winners Gebre Gebremariam of Ethiopia, Edna Kiplagat of Kenya and 2009 champion Meb Keflezighi of the United States.
Britain’s Jo Pavey will make her ING New York City Marathon debut this year after making her marathon debut in London this past April. Pavey had two strong New York City finishes earlier this year: sixth at the NYC Half in March and seventh at the NYRR New York Mini 10K in June.
“I’m really excited to be coming back to New York to race for the third time this year, and to be finally toeing the line in Staten Island,” said Pavey.
“No marathon career would be complete without competing in the ING New York City Marathon, and it’s great that my second marathon will be in a race that has such a tremendous history. NYRR has assembled a strong field, and a world-class race is exactly what I need ahead of an Olympic year. The marathon is new to me and I’m finding the new challenge really motivating—I can’t wait for November 6th!”
Two-time New York City Marathon champion Martin Lel, 2011 Virgin London Marathon champion Emmanuel Mutai and Olympians Juan Luis Barrios and Jaouad Gharib will join the stellar field for the ING New York City Marathon.
The 2011 IAAF World Championships Marathon bronze medalist, Feyisa Lilesa of Ethiopia, and the second-fastest half-marathoner in the world this year, Matthew Kisorio of Kenya are also part of the starting line-up.
2010 Virgin London Marathon runner-up Inga Abitova of Russia, three-time Rome Marathon champion Firehiwot Dado of Ethiopia, 2010 SportZone Half-Marathon (Portugal) champion Stephen Kibet of Kenya, and Moroccan Olympian Abdellah Falil are also set to take part.
“The field for the ING New York City Marathon 2011 is going to blockbuster strong,” said New York Road Runners president and CEO Mary Wittenberg. “We’re ensured a great race when we have the likes of two-time champion Martin Lel, London champion Emmanuel Mutai and perennial contender Jaouad Gharib. And we’re honored to host Jo Pavey as she continues her build-up to the London 2012 Olympics in her home country.”
Live coverage of the 2011 ING New York City Marathon is on British Eurosport 2 at 2pm on Sunday 6 November.
