Amir Khan, the WBA super-lightweight champion of the World will face European champion Paul McCloskey in his fourth defence of the title on Saturday, 16th April.
The Bolton boxer’s spring bout will be his third headline showdown at the MEN Arena with his last appearance, in 2009, ending in a win over Andreas Kotelnik to lift the WBA title.
Khan said: “I am delighted that this fight has finally been put together following some tough negotiations,”
“This is a matchup the British public want to see and will be a fantastic fight between two of the best super-lightweights in the country”.
“Amir is back. The ‘King’ is back. It’s his homecoming, his first fight at home in over 12 months,” said Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer, Khan’s promoter. “He is excited to take on an undefeated fighter in Paul McCloskey.”
McCloskey, 31, from Northern Ireland, claimed the vacant European title when he stopped Daniel Rasilla in the ninth round in 2009, and has defended the title twice. 24 year old Khan has a career record of 24 wins (17 knockouts) and one loss.
The fight will be screened exclusively live on Sky Box Office on April 16th. Sky boxing commentator Jim Watt said: “Amir’s fight against Maidana proved what a talented and exciting young boxer he is.”
“It was a landmark win for him and under the stewardship of trainer Freddie Roach he has proved himself as a truly world-class fighter. I can’t wait to see how he takes on McCloskey in what I’m sure will be a full MEN Arena. This will be a tough test for Khan and one that he cannot take lightly if he looks to establish himself as the best light-welterweight in the world.”
