Carl Froch takes on Andre Ward at Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City in the final bout of the Super Six competition for the WBC / WBA Super-Middleweight title on Saturday 17 December – live on Sky Sports HD1.
The fight, originally scheduled for October 29 was postponed fter Ward sustained a cut above his right eye during a sparring session.
Froch, 34, has been beaten only once in an exceptional 29-fight career, his sole loss to Mikkel Kessler on points. Speaking ahead of the fight, he said : “I guarantee you that you will not be disappointed with what you see on Saturday night”
“I am in the best shape of my life. It’s as simple as that. I’ve been on the weight now for a couple of weeks. I feel sharp, strong, confident. Physically and mentally, I could not be in better shape. I know I’m ready and I know that Saturday night is going to be my night.”
Ward, 27, from California, unbeaten in 24 contests and a former Olympic champion, said: “They are calling me the favourite. I’m not the favourite. There have been questions raised by Carl, by the media, about my toughness, my physicality. You don’t squeak victories out at this level. This fight should be dubbed ‘No Excuses’. No judges, no referees, no nothing. May the best man win on Saturday night.”
When asked about the next step for the winner, both men dismissed IBF champion Lucian Bute as a credible opponent for the victor of Saturday’s monumental unification bout.
“Bute isn’t even in the discussion,” said Froch. “I know he’s the IBF champion but the two names on his record are Brian Magee and Glen Johnson, that’s it. He lost to a guy named Librado Andrade. He actually got KO’d. The referee picked him up off the floor, washed his gumshield 40 seconds later and the bell was rung and he won on points. But in my opinion, he was knocked out. Lucian Bute needs to fight some of the top level people before he can call himself the best or in the top three in the world.”
Froch’s unbeaten stablemate Kell Brook makes his US debut on the same bill against Luis Galarza – both fights are live on Sky Sports HD1 from midnight Saturday 17 December.
