Former BBC and ITV sports presenter Des Lynam will front a series of documentaries – Ali: Still the Greatest to be screened over 5 consecutive nights on ITV4 starting on Tuesday 17 January to mark the boxer’s 70th birthday.
Broadcast report that ITV Sport have acquired the rights to six of Ali’s most high profile bouts from ESPN, each of which will be separately analysed and feature in the hour long shows.
The series opener will feature Ali clinching the World Heavyweight title from Sonny Liston in 1965, as well as his second encounter with The Big Bear a year later, which only lasted a single round.
It will progress to Ali’s 1975 encounter with Joe Bugner and then the ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ with George Foreman in 1974.
The final two documentaries will focus on Ali’s 1975 bout with Joe Frazier, dubbed the ‘Thrilla in Manila’, and his title clash with Ken Norton in 1976.
The 5-part series will be broadcast on ITV4 starting at 10.05pm on Tuesday 17 January (the date of Ali’s 70th birthday) and on the four subsequent evenings at 9pm.
As previously reported on touchline.tv, ITV1 will also air a special documentary When Ali Came to Britain on Monday 16 January at 10.35pm.
