Mayweather v Cotto live and exclusive on BoxNation

Floyd Mayweather’s blockbuster pay-per-view showdown against Miguel Cotto will be televised live and exclusive in the UK on dedicated boxing channel BoxNation on Saturday 5 May.

It’s set to be the one of the biggest fights of the year from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas between two superstars of the sport. Mayweather, regarded as the world’s best pound-for-pound fighter, faces a dangerous challenger in his 20th world title fight and puts his 42-fight unbeaten record on the line when he steps up to challenge for Cotto’s WBA Super World Light-Middleweight title.

The five-weight and eight-time world champion, who last defeated Victor Ortiz in a controversial fight, has beaten some of the sport’s biggest names in Oscar De La Hoya, Juan Manuel Marques, Ricky Hatton and Shane Mosley, but Cotto will be his toughest fight to date.

Mayweather said, “Miguel Cotto is a world-class fighter who can never be taken for granted and continues to prove he is one of the best in boxing.  It will be a challenge for me to compete with him at this weight, but this is the type of test I thrive on and gives me the motivation to train even harder. I have no doubt in my mind that my title belt collection will increase once again and Cotto’s reign as champion will come to an end on May 5.”

Puerto Rican puncher Cotto, a three-weight and four-time world champion, makes the third defence of his title and aims to be the first man in over 15 years’ to beat Mayweather.

He won the title in 2010 with a ninth round stoppage of Yuri Foreman and has made two defences; a sensational twelfth round stoppage of Ricardo Mayora last March and then he avenged his loss to rival Antonio Margarito last December which was televised live on BoxNation.

Cotto said, “I’ve never ducked anyone or any challenge in front of me. I have accepted everything to give the fans what they like — great and exciting fights. That is what the sport of boxing is all about, making the fights that the fans want and deserve to see. On May 5, stay tuned, because I will convincingly beat Floyd Mayweather.”

BoxNation has broadcast an unrivaled four  world title fights already this year with another six in the coming months – including Dereck Chisora’s WBC World Heavyweight title challenge against Vitali Klitschko and Britain’s only two World Champions Nathan Cleverly’s and Ricky Burns in title defences.

Simon Green, CEO of BoxNation, said, “BoxNation is delighted to add this fantastic fight between two of the sports premier boxers to it’s already packed schedule of world title fights.  Fans in the UK have asked about Mayweather fighting on BoxNation and we are thrilled that we have delivered to them a fight of this stature.”

Floyd Mayweather v Miguel Cotto is live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky 456, Virgin 546) on Saturday 5 May.
