Channel 5 are to bring boxing back to terrestrial television after signing a deal with promoter to screen the British and Commonwealth Heavyweight title clash between Dereck Chisora and Tyson Fury.
In his last action in February, Fury knocked out previously unbeaten Narcelo Luiz Nascimento in the fifth round. Other notable UK heavyweights defeated by Tyson include John McDermott and Scott Belshaw. Cooper, who recently passed away.
Fury’s promoter Mick Hennessy said: “We are absolutely delighted we are back on terrestrial TV with Channel 5 – it’s a huge deal for us.
“Tyson is a great heavyweight, he is very marketable and a great talker. This gives us the chance to build the fighter and then, when he’s big enough, when he’s a proper household name and the time is right, they can flip him over to their own pay-per-view channel Primetime.”
English champion Fury, 22, with 10 KOs from his 14 straight wins said : “This is a real grudge match, we are both undefeated, we have a similar KO record and the public want to see us in the same ring. I have the personality and the boxing style to be a major draw on TV. It’s a massive fight, a big launch pad and I want to make a positive statement.”
Channel 5 coverage will be anchored by award-winning boxing announcer Al Bernstein with Mark Pougatch ringside for the commentary. Mark Sharman, Executive Producer, S3 Media Ltd said : “Boxing is a new venture for Channel Five and we want to create the very best impression”.
He added : “Fury v Chisora is a great match-up between two unbeaten heavyweights with world title aspirations, so we want a world-class expert to call the fight. They don’t come any bigger than Al Bernstein and I know the viewers will enjoy the benefits of his insight and expertise.”
The fight, billed ‘The Big Brawl’ is scheduled to take place at Wembley Arena on Saturday 23 July and will be broadcast live on Channel 5 from 10pm.
