Sky Sports are to make TV history once again as the StanJames.com World Matchplay Darts tournament is to be shown in 3D for the first time.
After succesfully trying out football, rugby union, super league and cricket earlier this month, darts becomes the next sport to be featured in 3D. The coverage will be available in over 1,000 venues in the UK and Ireland on the final two days from the Winter Gardens, Blackpool on July 24 and 25.
The coverage will make use of additional seven camera rigs and two cameras above the dartboard to enhance the image of darts flying through the air in 3D.
Sky Sports commentator, Sid Wadell described the move as “a revolution in darts TV broadcasting,”. He added : “For years I’ve described our coverage as resembling a rock and roll concert on your telly. Now it’s going to resemble a rock and roll concert in your pub – I can’t wait!!”
Sky Sports’ 3D coverage will accompany their regular coverage of the tournament in High Definition on Sky Sports HD1 and Sky Sports 1.
