Sky 3D viewers will get to see snooker in a whole new dimension during live coverage of the Partypoker.com Snooker Shoot-Out in Blackpool.
Sky 3D will show the final day of the event, on Sunday 29 January at the Blackpool Tower Circus. Snooker becomes the 12th sport to be shown by Sky in 3D, and viewers watching in 3D will be able to watch it like never before, and see the angles the players see thanks to the heightened sense of depth and perspective.
World Snooker Chairman Barry Hearn said: “This is a wonderful innovation from Sky and I can’t wait to see what 3D snooker looks like. It’s going to give the viewer an enhanced understanding of how good the top players are and how easy they make the game look.
“We introduced the Shoot-Out as a new tournament last year and we were ecstatic with how well it went. There were some incredibly dramatic moments and the format worked perfectly. If fans can be there in person then the atmosphere is extraordinary, but if they can’t then watching in 3D on Sky will be a great second best.”
The one-frame knockout tournament started on Friday 27 January and features 64 of the world’s top players including new sensation Judd Trump, legend Steve Davis, World Champion John Higgins and crowd favourite Jimmy White. Frames last a maximum of ten minutes and there’s a shot clock to ensure fast paced action. Andy Goldstein presents live Sky Sports coverage over the 3 day tournament.
Sky launched Sky 3D, Europe’s first domestic 3D channel to millions of Sky homes on Friday 1 October 2010 with an exciting line-up of movies, live sport and further shows spanning entertainment and the arts.
All Sky+HD viewers with a 3D TV are able to receive Sky 3D and no set-top box upgrade is required. Customers who subscribe to Sky’s top channel and HD pack can receive access to a wide range of 3D movies, entertainment and sports at no extra charge.
Over a million sports fans have already watched a range of sports broadcast live in 3D since the channel’s launch. Sports covered to date include football, rugby union, cricket, rugby league and darts. Sky 3D is compatible with all of the 3D TVs being introduced by Sony, Samsung, LG and Panasonic and works with both ‘active’ and ‘passive’ 3D formats.
