BBC Wales reveal nominees for Welsh Sports Personality

December 5, 2011   ·   0 Comments

The 2011 BBC Cymru Wales Sports Personality of the Year will be revealed on BBC Radio Wales on Monday 12 December between 7.30pm and 9pm before the winner appears on BBC Wales Today on BBC One Wales at 10.25pm.

Following the announcement, a review of the sporting year will be broadcast on Tuesday 13 December on BBC One Wales at 10.35pm. There will also be awards for the team of the year, sports’ unsung hero, junior sportsman, junior sportswoman and lifetime achievement.

It has been a busy sporting year with some notable performances, making it another difficult decision to narrow down Welsh sport’s big names to five nominees to be Gareth Bale’s successor.  The nominees are :

  • Boxer Nathan Cleverly became WBO light-heavyweight champion in 2011 and successfully defended his title twice during the year.
  • Motorcyclist Chaz Davies finished the year as World Supersport champion and Superbikes beckons next year.
  • Athlete Dai Greene won gold at the World Championships in South Korea in September, his achievement crowning a glittering season for the 400 metre hurdler.
  • Triathlete Helen Jenkins battled through a gruelling season to become world champion and has her eyes set on Olympics glory in 2012.
  • Paralympian Nathan Stephens started the year on a high, winning gold in his category in the javelin in the World Championships in New Zealand in January before breaking the world record in August.

Voting opens at 8am on Monday 5 December 2011 and will close at 6pm on Saturday 10 December 2011. Please note that votes will not count after this time, although you may still be charged for the call / text.

Please also note that this vote is not connected with the UK Sports Personality of the Year and is for the Wales award only.
