Sky has apologised to customers after technical problems meant that some boxing fans were unable to order the £14.95 Haye-Klitschko pay-per-view fight.
The broadcaster said it had an “issue” with new telephone and online bookings for Saturday night’s world heavyweight unification bout caused by “unprecedented demand”.
During the build-up to the contest, which saw England’s Haye lose to Klitschko on points, Sky urged customers via Twitter to “please find your nearest pub”.
Sky confirmed that the main method of booking was available (pressing “box office” on your Sky remote), but despite bringing in a significant number of extra staff for the night, online and telephone bookings were not available for a period of time on the night of the fight, due to unprecedented demand.
A statement posted on Sky’s website read : “We are sorry to have disappointed any viewers who were unable to order Haye v Klitschko. Sky had an issue during the evening with new telephone and online bookings for the fight.
“We had encouraged early booking over three weeks leading up to the fight. However we experienced unprecedented demand on the night and whilst early telephone and online purchases worked, there were issues with late bookings through these routes on Saturday.”
Sky added “Anyone who booked through the interactive booking or had booked early through any of the methods was able to see the fight.”
As a result of the glitch, Sky have made the repeat showings on Sky Box Office available at no charge to all Sky customers on Sunday 3 July at 9am, 1pm & 7pm on Sky Box Office (739) and in HD (752).
