Sky Sports celebrates 20 years of broadcasting on Wednesday, 20th April. Launching in 1991, Sky Sports is the jewel of BSkyB’s crown and the driving force behind the pay TV broadcasters success. The channel is credited with revolutionising sports broadcasting, from the introduction of the on-screen clock and scoreline to the launch of multi-screen, ‘playercam’ and pioneers of HD and more recently 3D coverage.
There are now five 24 hr Sky Sports channels, including Sky Sports News, which have broadcast over 537,000 hours of sport in the past 20 years, with over 1,000 live outside broadcasts a year. The Barclays Premier League coverage continues to be Sky Sports biggest single asset, and the broadcaster has contributed to making the league the world’s most popular and most watched sporting league, followed worldwide by over half a billion people in over 200 countries.
