The Daily Telegraph are reporting that ITV have made a late bid to acquire terrestrial highlights of the Ashes 2010 from Cricket Australia.
The BBC has previously declined to bid arguing that the £1 million price tag was too high. Scheduling has also been a complication, the contract for live coverage on Sky TV stipulates that the highlights show can only be screened after 10pm, shortly before the next day’s play was due to begin. This proposition has made the highlights less attractive to a terrestrial broadcaster.
However, according to reports in the Daily Telegraph, Cricket Australia are understood to have dropped the asking price, and ITV which had unexpected success with their coverage of the Indian Premier League on ITV4, has declared an interest in acquiring the rights.
The Telegraph report that although no deal has been finalised, industry insiders expect it to go ahead in the next few days. If this move by ITV is confirmed, it will be welcome news for those viewers without access to Sky Sports channels.
Sky Sports HD will show every ball of the Test and one-day series while skysports.com will provide up to the minute coverage including scores and text commentary, match reports, video interviews and highlights plus columns by Sky Sports commentators.
