ITV4 will broadcast live coverage of the world’s most famous cycling road race, The Tour De France 2011 which begins on Saturday 2nd July and continues for over three weeks.
The 98th Tour de France has 21 stages covering almost 3,500 km and kicks off in the beautiful Vendee region of France overlooking the Atlantic coast.
All eyes will be on last year’s winner Alberto Contador, whose epic shoulder-to-shoulder battles with his closest rival, Luxembourg’s Andy Schleck, form the enduring images from last year’s Tour.
Controversy seems to follow Contador around, with cycling fans still arguing over the infamous 2010 incident during which he gained valuable seconds when Schleck’s chain came off. That moment, which was considered unsportsmanlike behaviour by many, coupled with a still ongoing dispute over failed tests for illegal substances, has certainly tarnished the Spanish rider’s achievement.
Closer to home, the Sky team – including Britain’s Bradley Wiggins – will be quietly confident that they can put in a strong showing this year following Wiggins’s recent triumph and career-best performance in the Criterium du Dauphine.
Wiggins and the Sky team must now feel that they have come of age, especially with new signing Rigoberto Uran strengthening their squad. Isle of Man cyclist Mark Cavendish will have his eye on the green jersey for the sprints, and he will want to put in a good performance ahead of next year’s Olympics, at which he is tipped for a gold medal.
ITV4 will cover the opening stage on Saturday 2nd July with live coverage from 12 midday, and comprehensive live coverage daily from 2pm thereafter. Gary Imlach, Chris Boardman and Ned Boulting present the daily ITV4 coverage with commentary from Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen.
