ITV4 continues its commitment to cycling with nightly highlights of the Tour of Britain, a major date on the UK’s cycling calendar from 11 – 18 September.
Following what was one of the most widely acclaimed Tour de France tournaments for many years, and with more of the same from La Vuelta in Spain, the popularity of cycling is high at the moment. In the UK the sport has really hit a purple patch with the success of Bradley Wiggins and, of course, Mark Cavendish, who was the first British rider ever to win the Green Jersey in the Tour de France this year.
Mark Cavendish has been given permission by the organisers of the Vuelta a España to start the Tour of Britain and will be able to race in front of home crowds for potentially the final time before the 2012 London Olympics.
The Tour of Britain also offers a great chance to see some potential stars of the future – Andy Schleck and Matt Goss both tried their luck in the tournament early in their careers.
The competition kicks off in Scotland on Sunday 11th September with the first stage of eight, which starts in Peebles and finishes in Dumfries. Lancashire, Wales, the Midlands, East Anglia and the West Country all host stages this year and, as is the tradition with these events, the Tour finishes in the capital. This year’s tournament will end with a 10km time trial on a circuit around the Thames on the Embankment.
Each evening ITV4 will bring fans an hour’s highlights programme with all the action and news from the day’s racing, while after The TfL London Stage a bumper 90-minute highlights show will wrap-up all of the action from the individual time trial and circuit race, which will decide the 2011 Tour of Britain.
