London’s new multi-million pound Olympic Velodrome will host the final round of the 2011-12 UCI Track Cycling World Cup series between 16-19 February, with live coverage on the BBC.
This will be the first sporting event ever to be staged in the brand new Velodrome on the Olympic Park and presents the first opportunity for many top athletes to race on the new track.
The final round of this season’s UCI Track Cycling World Cup is part of the London Prepares series, which will allow the London 2012 Organising Committee to test crucial aspects of its operations in preparation for the Games. It will also give the world’s elite track riders a chance to gain valuable ranking points for their nation to help them qualify for the 2012 Games.
Cycling is expected to be one of Great Britain’s most successful sports at the 2012 Olympics, and the weekend will be an opportunity to see how Britain’s best hopes are faring in the build-up to the London Games.
The line-up features five Olympic Champions and 16 World Champions including current Olympic gold medallists Sir Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton (Great Britain); Sprint World Champions Jason Kenny (Great Britain) and Anna Meares (Australia); as well as Robert Forstemann (Germany) who is currently ranked World Cup number one in Sprint and Team Sprint.
Jake Humphrey will present BBC Two coverage from the Track Cycling World Cup meeting in London with additional live coverage available on the BBC Red Button and BBC Online over the weekend of 17-19 February.
