It’s the debate that’s raged between football fans up and down the country for years, but the statistics make it pretty hard to argue that Sir Alex Ferguson is possibly the greatest manager of all time.

In the build up to the 25 year anniversary of Sir Alex Ferguson’s appointment as manager of Manchester United, ESPN Classic have produced a special programme, 25 years United: Sir Alex Ferguson.  This brand new 5-part series features never-before seen footage and chronicles the great mans reign at Old Trafford.

Since taking over, Ferguson has seen the club go through an era of success and dominance both in England and in Europe, giving him a reputation as one of the most admired and respected managers in the history of the game.

Since his appointment on 6th November 1986, Ferguson has re-established Manchester United as the dominant force domestically and one of the leading clubs in Europe. Each episode of 25 Years United: Sir Alex Ferguson will focus on a specific phase of his career with The Red Devils.

    1. The Beginning – The series begins with the period between 1986 and 1993, charting Ferguson’s difficult early years at the club and his initial success.
    2. The Golden Generation – The second episode covers 1993 to 1998, journeying through landmark moments such as his first league win and double triumphs.
    3. Time to Retire?Episode three covers 1998 to 2001, and the unforgettable treble-winning season in 1999, plus Sir Alex contemplating retirement before changing his mind and driving his team to even more glory.
    4. A New VintageThe fourth instalment focuses on 2001 to 2011, when Ferguson built his third great Manchester United team, won his second Champions League and secured a record breaking 19th league title.
    5. Greatest Ever? The final episode asks where he stands in the pantheon of great managers.

25 Years United: Sir Alex Ferguson features interviews throughout with Ferguson’s colleagues, players and rival managers such as Howard Wilkinson and George Graham, predecessor Ron Atkinson and Manchester United stars including Dion Dublin, Dwight Yorke and Arthur Albiston.

25 Years United : Sir Alex Ferguson is on ESPN Classic over 5 consecutive nights starting at 10pm from Monday 31 October.
