Ben Shephard is to be the new face of Sky Sports football coverage after landing a reported £495,000 a-year deal with the satellite network.
The Mirror reports that Shepard, 35 will host dozens of live matches this season after agreeing the lucrative contract in the last week. Insiders suggested that the deal would include anchoring some high profile Champions League and Premier League matches.
Richard Keys has been the face of Sky Sports football coverage since it’s launch in 1992, and it is believed that Shephard’s appointment will not encroach upon his role. The broadcaster believes that there are sufficient matches in the portfolio for the two presenters to ‘compliment’ one another.
A Sky Sports insider said : “Whatever way you look at it, it’s a huge coup to get Ben Shephard onto the channel and Sky will want value for money and to promote him where ever possible. He was one of the most-known faces on ITV broadcasting to millions of people every week.”
The insider added : “Many viewers may feel that Ben is ideal to take over from Richard when he decides to step down.”
Ben Shephard is set to leave the GMTV sofa this coming Friday, following the recent announcement that the programme will be axed and replaced by ‘Daybreak’ with Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley.
