Celtic Football Club have announced a Battle of The Legends match – Celtic Legends v Manchester United Legends on Tuesday 9 August to be broadcast live on ITV4.
This unique charity match which has a 7.45pm kick-off will see a host of former players join with a number of celebrity fans to battle it out on the pitch at Celtic Park. Celtic Charity Fund, the charitable arm of Celtic Football Club, said the match will be used to raise money for Oxfam’s East Africa Famine Appeal.
A number of legends have already confirmed their participation, for Celtic – Henrik Larsson, Chris Sutton, Lubo Moravcik and the current management team of Neil Lennon, Johan Mjallby and Alan Thompson.
On the Manchester United side Teddy Sheringham, Dwight Yorke and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have all signed up and the line-up has swelled further this week with the addition of United hero Roy Keane.
Keane made 326 appearances for Man U scoring 33 goals and the return to Celtic Park will bring back memories of his final season as a player. He returns to Celtic on the eve of his 40th birthday and will surely be looking for a victory to put the icing on his celebrations. The former Ireland international played 10 times for Celtic FC in the 2005/2006 season before retiring on medical grounds.
Exec producer Lester Holcombe said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have secured Roy to play. For many of the fans he’s the greatest midfielder that Man U ever had. He never took any prisoners and we’re fully expecting him to bring that same competitive edge to this game.”
Henrik Larsson said: “It will be a tremendous pleasure to return to Celtic Park and play in this charity match in front of the best fans in the world. I played for seven incredible years in Glasgow and can’t wait to get back and pull on the green and white Hoops once again.”
Dwight Yorke said: “It’s always a pleasure pulling on the red jersey and having had a look at the team lists, this is shaping up to be a great game of football.
“The Celtic team is a who’s who of top legends and some very interesting celebs are making an appearance too. But just because this is a charity match doesn’t mean we are coming up to make up the numbers.
“We have top Man United legends and a great squad of celebrities from music, film, TV and sport in our team, who can all play a bit. I know that Henrik always gets an amazing reception at Celtic Park and it’s great that he’s flying in for the game. It’s going to be an amazing atmosphere up there.”
Celebrities signed up for the match so far include Patrick Kielty, Richard Ashcroft, Ricky Hatton, Nigel Benn, Angus Deayton, Ricky Whittle and Nicky Byrne.
The match is the 9th game produced by the Legends for live broadcast in the UK and internationally. These matches have raised hundreds of thousands for charity and are watched by millions of people worldwide.
Celtic Legends v Manchester United will be broadcast live on ITV4 from 7pm on Tuesday 9 August. Angus Scott presents all the action alongside a man who has played for both teams – Lou Macari. Lou is best remembered as a United player who enjoyed a career spanning over a decade with the Reds.
