ITV1 & Sky Sports 1 will broadcast live coverage from Wembley of the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League Final between Barcelona and Manchester United, (a repeat of the 2009 final) on Saturday 28th May.
In 2009, a below-par United were beaten 2-0 in Rome by the Catalan club, but this time around their European form has been impressive and they demolished Schalke in the semi-final. Barcelona have also played brilliantly all season– their only defeat was to Arsenal at the Emirates, but they gained revenge in the home leg at the Nou Camp.
Barcelona, widely regarded as the world’s best club team, will certainly start as favourites. Lionel Messi hailed the most talented player of a generation has already scored more than 50 goals this season, and his second in the semi-final against Real Madrid has been acclaimed as one of the greatest goals ever.
In the opposing camp, Wayne Rooney will pose a threat along with Mexican striker Javier Hernandez as United look to add to the Premier League title they won this season. Sir Alex Ferguson will be hoping to avenge Manchester United’s 2-0 defeat to Barcelona two years ago.
Sky Sports coverage commences at 6pm whilst ITV Sport’s build-up to the game commences at 7pm on Saturday 28th May. Adrian Chiles will be joined by former Manchester United skipper Roy Keane for live ITV coverage from Wembley Stadium with commentary from Clive Tyldesley and Andy Townsend. The match kick-off is at 8pm.
In addition to the live coverage, ITV will take a look back at previous rivalries between the two clubs in a special programme entitled, ‘Manchester United v Barcelona : A Footballing Rivalry’. The programme looks back at the ten previous occasions the teams have met in the modern era, reflecting on the goals and glory nights including two past European finals. This special programme is broadcast on Friday 27th May at 9pm on ITV4.
