Sky Sports will screen the Emirates Cup, the annual pre-season tournament featuring Arsenal and three of Europe’s leading football clubs over the weekend of Saturday, July 31 & Sunday, August 1.
The Emirates Cup 2010 will see Arsenal joined by Italian powerhouse, AC Milan, Scottish giants Celtic and leading French club, Lyon in the pre-season curtain raiser. As in the previous Emirates Cup tournaments, two matches will be played on both Saturday and Sunday with all matches screened on Sky Sports 3.
The tournament kicks-off at 2pm on Saturday 31st July with Celtic taking on Lyon. This is followed at 4.20pm with hosts and current Emirates Cup holders Arsenal playing AC Milan. Sunday’s fixtures also start at 2pm, when AC Milan take on Lyon, with Arsenal and Celtic bringing the competition to a climax kicking off the final match at 4.20pm on Sunday afternoon.
Teams are awarded 3 points for a win and 1 point for a draw. The competition also rewards attacking play, with teams also being awarded 1 point for each goal they score. In addition, shots on target will also be counted and will be used to decide the tournament winners if teams are level on points and goal difference.
Arsenal Chief Executive Ivan Gazidis said: “We’re delighted and proud to once again be welcoming three of Europe’s most high-profile teams to Emirates Stadium for an exciting weekend of football.
“The Emirates Cup has been hugely successful since we staged the inaugural tournament back in 2007 and we’re again looking forward to staging this weekend of football, which is now recognised as one of the world’s most prestigious pre-season tournaments.
“We have three big teams coming this year in AC Milan, Celtic and Lyon, who all have huge international followings and rich histories. I’m sure all supporters are looking forward to the weekend, which not only offers the opportunity to watch two top quality matches each day, but of course, also provides the teams with a high level of preparation ahead of the forthcoming season.”
