England get the new season underway with an International Friendly match against Holland at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday 10 August – live on ITV1.
It’s a testing start for Fabio Capello in his final season as England manager. Holland reached the World Cup Final a year ago while Wesley Sneijder and co have won all six group games in their qualifying campaign for Euro 2012.
Wembley has not proven lucky for England recently, Capello’s team have not tasted success there for almost a year – with a run of four games without a win. A good performance tonight would also provide the perfect preparation ahead of the important Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Wales early next month.
This game was arranged as a return fixture from the game played between the two teams in Amsterdam in August 2009, when it ended 2-2. That game was memorable for England, after coming back from 2-0 down at half-time to seal a draw in the second half thanks to two goals from Jermain Defoe who had only been introduced as a substitute at the break.
Now the two teams meet again, in Holland’s first visit to the new Wembley Stadium and they are sure to be backed in large numbers by their colourful fans making the relatively short trip across from the Netherlands.
Adrian Chiles presents live ITV1 coverage from 7.30pm (kick-off 8pm) on Wednesday 10 August with commentary from Clive Tyldesley and Jim Beglin.
