ESPN has announced that former Arsenal and England defender Martin Keown is joining the broadcaster as a football analyst. Keown, who also starred for Everton and Aston Villa during a 20-year playing career, will form part of the sports media company’s coverage of the Barclays Premier League and the FA Cup.
Keown has already contributed to ESPN’s live and exclusive coverage of the Emirates Cup this summer and joins an ESPN football analyst line-up featuring Kevin Keegan, Robbie Savage, Steve McManaman, John Barnes, Chris Waddle and Craig Burley.
Starting his career at Arsenal, for whom he played more than 400 games, Keown won multiple honours as a key member of the club’s defence, and helped lead them to three Premier League titles, three FA Cups and one UEFA Cup win. Keown also had spells at Brighton, Aston Villa, Everton, Leicester City and Reading. In total, he made more than 700 appearances for club and country, including 43 caps while playing for England.
“As a fan, I have always enjoyed watching ESPN’s lively coverage of football and think they have brought some innovative new aspects to coverage in the UK,” said Keown. “I’m looking forward to working with Kevin, Robbie, Chris, Craig and the rest of the team.”
Jeroen Oerlemans, ESPN Vice President, TV Channels Europe, Middle East and Africa, added: “Martin is a great addition to what we think is among the very best on-air presenting teams in the industry, delivering smart analysis and opinion with personality and authority. Martin enjoyed a fantastic playing career at Arsenal and rightly earned recognition as one of the best ever defenders to play for the Gunners. We’re delighted to have him on board.”
