ESPN will broadcast live and exclusive coverage of the Copa America 2011 for the first time starting with the opening fixture on Friday 1 July (early hours of Sat 2 July BST) through to the final on Sunday 24 July.
The tournament features 10 of South America’s best national teams as well as special invitees Mexico and Japan, who will be playing in their first tournament following the earthquake and tsunami which hit the country in March.
Fans will be able to catch some of the world’s best players in action when the tournament begins on Friday 1 July as ESPN covers all of the tournament’s 26 matches.
Holders Brazil go into the tournament after a disappointing display in last year’s World Cup. The new look side has to date been based around the mercurial attacking talents of Santos wonderkid and Chelsea target Neymar, alongside the skills of AC Milan’s Robinho and the strong midfield presence of Chelsea’s Ramires and Liverpool’s Lucas Leiva.
Argentina, who haven’t won the Copa America since 1993, look set to boast current FIFA World Player of the Year, Lionel Messi, in the tournament. He is set to be surrounded by players such as Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria, Manchester City’s Carlos Tevez and Barcelona’s Javier Mascherano.
A host of other impressive teams will feature in the tournament, including 2010 World Cup semi finalists Uruguay, who are set to line up with Liverpool’s Luis Suarez, Athletico Madrid’s Diego Forlan, and Napoli striker Edinson Cavani. Mexico too, with Manchester United’s Javier Hernandez expected to be leading the line, will be looking to impress.
ESPN’s coverage of Copa America 2011 will also include daytime repeats of overnight matches, for those looking to catch-up at a more reasonable hour.
