England and Wales meet each other in a Euro 2012 qualifier on Tuesday 6 September to be screened live from Wembley on ITV1.
England may be more than 100 places higher than Wales in the FIFA world rankings, but Wayne Rooney and his team-mates will have to guard against complacency in this clash of old rivals with pride as well as points at stake.
England’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales is their second match of the season after the friendly match against Holland
was called off. It comes a few days after a tricky away fixture in Bulgaria, so the result of that match will have a major impact on the team’s morale. Fabio Capello will be anxious that his team gets maximum points from this match, which they go into as overwhelming favourites.
Fabio Capello’s team have drawn their last two Euro 2012 qualifiers at Wembley against Montenegro and Switzerland and need all three points tonight as they bid to finish top of Group G.
Any hopes Wales had of reaching next summer’s finals in Poland and Ukraine were dashed last season, but manager Gary Speed will demand a display of passion from his team. Tottenham’s Gareth Bale promises to carry the main threat to England’s chances.
At the top of Group G, England and Montenegro both have 11 points at the time of writing, while Wales are languishing at the bottom with zero. The Welsh side, who are playing shortly after a home qualifier against Montenegro, lost their one warm-up game against Australia in mid-August.
Gary Speed is still settling into the role of Wales manager since taking over from John Toshack last season, but he has some brilliant young players such as Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey to call on.
Although they have essentially no chance of qualifying for Euro 2012, Wales will be looking to build for the future, and will jump at the chance to put one over on their neighbours.
Euro 2012 Qualifer : England v Wales is on Tuesday 26 September, kick-off at 7.45pm. Adrian Chiles introduces live coverage from Wembley on ITV1 / HD from 7pm and will be joined by Gareth Southgate and former Wales striker John Hartson in the studio. Commentary comes from Clive Tyldesley and Andy Townsend.
