ESPN announced today that John Barnes, the former Liverpool, Newcastle and England footballer, will join the broadcaster as a football analyst during Barclays Premier League and FA Cup matches.
Barnes adds to ESPN’s line-up of leading football analysts including Kevin Keegan, Steve McManaman, Robbie Savage, Chris Waddle and Craig Burley alongside a football presentation team led by hosts Ray Stubbs and Rebecca Lowe plus commentators Jon Champion and Derek Rae.
In a storied career that spanned 20 years, Barnes played nearly 600 matches, including 79 appearances for England, and took home two First Division titles and two FA Cup winners’ medals with Liverpool and scored 177 goals. In addition to Liverpool and Newcastle, Barnes played for Charlton Athletic and Watford – where he made his professional debut in 1981.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed contributing to ESPN’s football coverage periodically, and as a fan of the game have enjoyed watching what they put on air and the innovative approach that have brought to coverage,” said Barnes. “Having worked with Ray and the team as a part of ESPN’s FA Cup presentation team last season, I am excited by what we can do to bring something distinctive to football fans.”
“John had a remarkablecareer on the field and as an ambassador for the game of football, and has brought that same level of professionalism and excellence to his work in television,” said Jeroen Oerlemans, Vice President and channel manager, ESPN Europe, Middle East and Africa. “His combination of experience, personality and knowledge of football is something we think will fit perfectly with our team.”

Terrible appointment.
First Robbie Savage now John Barnes, ESPN seem to be doing all they can to drive the viewers away.
