The Scottish Premier League have announced that the final Old Firm match of the season has been scheduled to kick-off at 12:30pm on Easter Sunday following discussions with Strathclyde Police and the heads of security from both Rangers and Celtic.
The Scotsman report that the 24th April date means that the Ibrox fixture will take place on the first weekend of the league split. Police in Scotland are normally keen to avoid the match going ahead on a bank holiday weekend, but with the Royal Wedding, the first two weekends after the split are both holiday weekends.
Upon making the announcement, an SPL spokesman said : “In the past the SPL have tried to select a date which minimises the risk of the match being one that might decide the title. This year, with the first two weekends being Bank Holiday weekends, they (SPL secretary Iain Blair, Old Firm heads of security and Strathclyde Police) felt that they preferred to go with the 24th April date rather than leave it until later, when there was more chance of the game being a title decider.”
Rangers v Celtic will be broadcast live on Sky Sports 1 / HD1 on Sunday 24th April, coverage commences at 12 noon.
