ESPN have announced that Robbie Savage, the former Wales international, Leicester City, Birmingham City and Blackburn Rovers star, is joining ESPN as football analyst for the broadcasters coverage of the Barclays Premier League and The FA Cup.
Savage, recently awarded the Sony Radio Academy Rising Star Award in recognition for his broadcasting achievements to date, will join ESPN’s line-up of leading football pundits and analysts including Kevin Keegan, Steve McManaman, Chris Waddle and Craig Burley. Savage will form part of ESPN’s football presentation team led by hosts Ray Stubbs and Rebecca Lowe, as well as commentators Jon Champion and Derek Rae.
In a career spanning 20 years, Savage accumulated 623 club appearances for Crewe Alexandra, Leicester City, Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers and Derby County, plus 39 caps for the Welsh national side.
Upon the announcement of the deal, Savage said, “It is an absolute thrill to be joining ESPN on a multi-year deal. As a professional player, I have long admired ESPN’s fresh approach to covering football and have enjoyed working with the ESPN team on its outstanding FA Cup coverage in recent months. Next season is going to be fun – I cannot wait to get started.”
Jeroen Oerlemans, ESPN Vice President, TV Channels Europe, Middle East and Africa, said, “Everyone in the game knows Robbie is a truly unique personality. But along with that he brings with him the great authority and understanding of the game that has been forged through more than 20 years on and around the pitch. We’re delighted to add his unique character to our great team covering football for fans around the UK and Ireland.”
