The second Old Firm game of the season takes centre stage at Celtic Park on Wednesday 28 December with live coverage on Sky Sports HD1 from 7pm.
The meeting of Glasgow’s Old Firm is one of sport’s fiercest rivalries, and there is additional significance this time around in what could prove to be a pivotal date in the race for the title.
On Christmas Eve, the Ibrox side saw their lead at the top of the Scottish Premier League cut to just one point as they lost 2-1 in Paisley whilst Celtic won their eighth match in a row against Kilmarnock.
As at 5 November, Ally McCoist’s team were in possession of a 15-point lead which has since evaporated as Rangers hit a rut, with Celtic in the ascendancy. An Old Firm victory for Neil Lennon’s Celtic would see them leapfrog their oldest foes at the summit of the table going into the New Year.
Speaking ahead of the match, Ally McCoist denied that the momentum has swung in favour of Celtic, “We will be ready for the game, I can guarantee you that,” the Rangers manager said.
“It’s going to be a tough game but we will be ready and the players won’t need lifting for that one because it’s a big, big game.
“Celtic are on a good run of form at the moment in terms of victories, but it counts for absolutely nothing. The truth of the matter is I would rather be a point ahead than a point behind. Of that there is no doubt.”
Celtic boss Neil Lennon is looking to avenge the defeat in the first Old Firm derby of the season, losing 4-2 at Ibrox, “We didn’t do ourselves justice at Ibrox,” said Lennon.
“So I am looking to my team to be highly motivated and play better and compete better than they did in the second 45 minutes of the first Old Firm game.”
The second Old Firm Derby of the Scottish Premier League season, Celtic v Rangers is live from Celtic Park on Sky Sports HD1 from 7pm (kick off 7.45pm), presented by Dave Tanner.
