The England and Wales legends will complete an intriguing international double-header when they clash at Derby County’s Pride Park. Screened live on ITV4, The Legends: England v Wales, kicks off just 48 hours after England and Wales National Teams meet for the crucial Group G Euro 2012 qualifying game.
England and Wales Legends will compete for The John Hartson Trophy with all proceeds from the game going to the John Hartson Foundation which works to raise awareness of Testicular Cancer and raises funds to support cancer organisations throughout the UK.
The Legends: England v Wales will be The England Legends eighth outing. They have taken on Germany three times, (Sheff Utd’s Bramall Lane, Reading’s Madejski Stadium and Newcastle United’s St. James’ Park), Italy twice (Florence and Malta), Scotland (Southampton’s St. Mary’s) and Ireland (Fulham’s Craven Cottage).
Robbie Savage’s Welsh side will include names from showbiz and sport including Joe Calzaghe, Gethin Jones & John Hartson.
Speaking of the line-up Robbie said, “Joe was known as the Pride of Wales when he entered the ring. The man brings an awesome record and has never lost wearing the colours of Wales – who better to lead the line for the Welsh Legends?”
John Hartson whose cancer Foundation is benefitting from the proceeds from the match, says, “Joe is one of Wales and Britain’s greatest sporting heroes and its an honour for me that he has agreed to come and play in this special match. We are lining up some great names from football, music, TV and film and I know the English lads are going to have top line up too.”
Joe Calzaghe said: “I’ve heard a few names that I’m really excited about. The great thing about The Legends matches is that they bring together characters you’d never expect to see together on the football pitch. I’m looking forward to seeing who’s going to be lining up against me.”
Taking charge of the England side is Tottenham’s Harry Redknapp. Former England star Mark Wright, who was capped 45 times, turns out for the England Legends, while former Liverpool and Wales striker Dean Saunders lines up for the Welsh side.
Wright and Saunders are, of course, no strangers to Pride Park, having both played for Derby in the past. Also taking to the pitch for Wales is Gary Speed, the current national team coach.
Other sporting stars expected to take part are boxing champ Nathan Cleverly, Olympic silver medal-winning runner Jamie Baulch, and the UK 400 metre record-holder Iwan Thomas.
The Legends : England v Wales from Pride Park, Derby will be broadcast live on ITV4 from 7pm and internationally on Thursday 8 September 2011.
