ITV4 will screen live coverage of the the official curtain-raiser to the 2011/12 European season, as Champions League winners Barcelona take on UEFA Europa League trophyholders Porto in Monaco.
Barcelona’s Champions League victory against Manchester United at Wembley was generally considered to have been one of the best-ever finals.
With the score 1-1 at halftime, United must have thought that they were going to upset the odds, but Barca turned on a remarkable display of attacking in the second half to score twice more with goals from Lionel Messi and David Villa. The result left Sir Alex Ferguson admitting that the better team had won.
As well as the Europa League, FC Porto won both the Portuguese League and Cup under their new manager Andre Villas-Boas, who came to the club’s coaching staff under Jose Mourinho.
At 33, Villas-Boas became the youngest ever manager to win a European trophy, and he made such an impression that he followed in the footsteps of his mentor Mourinho to take over at Chelsea at the end of the season.
Key players for Porto are the Colombian striker Radamel Falcao, who scored a record 17 Europa League goals, and Hulk, the magnificently monikered Brazilian who certainly lives up to his footballing nickname.
Coverage of the UEFA Super Cup is live on ITV4 from 7pm on Friday 26 August, with highlights on ITV1 from 10.35pm. The match will also be broadcast live by Sky Sports HD1 from 7.30pm.
