The BBC looks set to hold on to the Augusta Masters after it emerged that Sky have abandoned their attempts to acquire the rights.
The Guardian are reporting that Sky has cooled on a potential deal after the Augusta organisers suggested that the two broadcasters screened coverage simultaneously. The BBC have held an association with the Augusta Masters since 1967, and this now looks likely to continue.
A final announcement is expected during next week’s Open Championship at St Andrews but the news is a positive for the continued presence of top class golf coverage on terrestrial television. All indications were that the BBC looked likely to lose rights to the Masters after being advised they would be required to pay the market rate.
