Dougie Donnelly has been one of the nations best known faces after fronting BBC coverage of seven Olympic Games, three World Cup finals, four Ryder Cups and four Commonwealth Games. However, after 18 years of service Donnelly, 56 was replaced as anchor for the BBC’s Open Golf coverage in 2008.
Whilst a setback, The Daily Record reports that the veteran broadcaster went on to reach a global audience of 400 million viewers reporting live from major tournaments for The Golf Channel. So far this year, Donnelly has touched down in South Africa and the Middle East and clocked up 60,000 air miles in the last 12 months alone, spending six of them on the road.
Dougie refers to his latest TV role which he landed a few years ago as “a happy coincidence”. “It was just as things were winding down with the BBC network – though I am still doing coverage for BBC Scotland. The golf tour always said, ‘If you are available, we’d love to have to do some tournaments with us.’
“It’s kind of grown. This year I’ll do 20-22 events for European Tour Productions. They produce the pictures and, while viewers in this country are watching on Sky with their commentators, viewers in English-speaking countries in the rest of the world are listening to me.
“The potential audience is around 400million. It’s a pretty scary thought.”
