The BBC will broadcast live coverage of the 43rd Walker Cup, in which the best amateur golfers from Great Britain and Ireland take on the USA.
The competition is held every two years and, in 2011, it will be played at the Balgownie Links of Royal Aberdeen Golf Club, the sixth-oldest club in the world.
The competition will be held over 10 & 11 September, with the USA set to travel to the north east of Scotland to contest the 43rd Match against Great Britain and Ireland’s most talented amateurs.
The last time the Walker Cup was contested, at Merion Golf Club, Pennsylvania, in 2009, the USA defeated Great Britain and Ireland 16 ½ to 9 ½ – the Americans have now won the last three matches home and away. Notable USA performances came from Rickie Fowler, now professional, and his former Oklahoma State University team-mate, Peter Uihlein, who both took four points from a possible four.
This year’s renewal could also feature a star of the future in the shape of England’s Tom Lewis, who caused a sensation at this year’s Open Championship, sharing the lead after the first round, and going on to win the silver medal for the leading amateur.
Hazel Irvine presents live BBC coverage starting on BBC One on Saturday 10 September at 2.15pm, before switching to BBC Two from 4.30pm. Live coverage continues on Sunday 11 September.
