The BBC may consider dropping Formula One coverage in order to save £60m on sports programming according to reports by the Guardian newspaper.
The report suggests that the BBC are required to reduce their annual spend on sports rights as part of cost cutting measures following a licence fee freeze. The broadcaster is required to find £600m in annual savings by 2014.
Formula One is thought to be ‘at risk’ as it is not peak-time programming and is viewed as an expensive part of the sporting schedule. The BBC acquired the rights to show F1 in 2009 when the then current broadcaster, ITV moved away from the sport, preferring to focus on football rights.
It is yet unknown if the move will go ahead, and the BBC have a contract with the FOM through to 2014. The Guardian also reports that coverage of the Wimbledon tennis tournament may also come under scrutinity as part of the BBC spending review.
A spokesperson at the BBC said : “We are looking at a range of ideas and it would be wrong to comment on what is speculation”
