ESPN has announced that Jon Desborough, one of the leading sports presenters in the UK, will host the channel’s exclusive UK coverage of the 2011 World Rally Championship. The addition of Desborough, who is also a Sky News sports presenter, follows the recent announcement of ESPN securing exclusive rights to broadcast WRC.
Previously nominated for both the RTS Sports Presenter and Sports Reporter of the Year Awards, Desborough is well known among motorsport fans for his work on Channel 4’s WRC coverage in 2002 and 2003, during which he presented the live shows at each of the 14 rallies in the championship. When ITV won the rights to the 2004 and 2005 WRC championships, his involvement with the sport continued to include presentation, commentary and interviews.
Jeroen Oerlemans, vice president and channel manager, ESPN, Europe, the Middle East and Africa said, “Jon’s experience as both a sports broadcaster and a passionate fan of the World Rally Championship, makes him a natural in this role. As a familiar face to sports fans in the UK, we’re delighted that Jon will be hosting our coverage as we add another great piece to our motorsports portfolio in the UK.”
Desborough, who will also continue in his role at Sky News, will debut on ESPN when the World Rally coverage begins on 11th February with highlights from the opening round of the 2011 season in Sweden, including coverage of the first live ‘Power Stage’ on 13th February.
