The world’s best darts players will return to Dublin’s New Citywest Convention Centre from October 3-9 for the 2011 PartyPoker.com World Grand Prix – with live coverage on Sky Sports.
Featuring 32 top stars playing for £350,000 in prize money, the World Grand Prix is one of the sport’s most exciting tournaments, with all legs needing to begin and finish with a double.
Legendary 15-time World Champion Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor heads the field of players, alongside reigning champion James Wade, current World Champion Adrian Lewis and Holland’s five-time World Champion Raymond van Barneveld.
Competitors will also include Australian star Simon Whitlock, three-time World Champion John Part, 2004 winner Colin Lloyd, Northern Ireland’s Brendan Dolan and Limerick-based youngster William O’Connor.
“The PartyPoker.com World Grand Prix is one of the highlights in the darting calendar, and it gives us great pleasure to welcome PartyPoker.com as the title sponsors of the tournament,” said PDC Chairman Barry Hearn.
“They have been great supporters of PDC tournaments in recent years and we’re delighted to have them on board once again.”
The PartyPoker.com World Grand Prix will begin on Monday night, with James Wade beginning the defence of his title against Bristol’s Steve Brown amongst eight first round matches.
Two other high-profile games feature World Champion Adrian Lewis against John Part and Raymond van Barneveld facing Mervyn King. Phil Taylor enters the event on Tuesday night, when he faces Peter Wright in one of the remaining eight first round games, which also feature Simon Whitlock against two-time finalist Terry Jenkins and in-form Gary Anderson against resurgent Welshman Richie Burnett.
The 2011 World Grand Prix will be the third year that the event is played in the New Citywest Convention Centre at the Citywest Hotel in Saggart, with thousands of fans travelling to the complex throughout the course of the seven nights.
Although he has dominated the event with nine title wins, Phil Taylor has now been knocked out of the World Grand Prix three times in the first round. In 2001, he lost 2-1 to qualifier Kevin Painter, in 2004 by 2 sets to 0 to Andy Callaby, and in 2007 he went down 2-0 in sets to Adrian Gray.
The current Champion is James Wade, who defeated Adrian Lewis 6-3 in the final on 10 October 2010.
