Clare Balding will present live coverage of the 157th Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge from the banks of London’s River Thames on Saturday, 26th March on BBC One / HD.
Last year, the light blues of Cambridge triumphed by more than a boat’s length in front of an enthusiastic crowd of 250,000 spectators. Cambridge lead the annual event by 80 victories to 75. The race, also a national institution and global attraction, was first contested back in 1829 and stretches four miles and 374 yards between Putney and Mortlake.
London Mayor, Boris Johnson recently told an audience of more than 50 media representatives that the Race was “a world-class sporting event that is huge for London”. With more than 250,000 on the river bank and 6 million watching on television, “it’s a supreme feat of training and competition,” he added.
He also acknowledged the importance of the Race to Britain’s Olympic medal prospects in London next year as one of the firmest fixtures in the sporting calendar.
“The Boat Race is a vital training ground for British Olympic success,” he said, having pointed to the fact that nine medal winners at the last Olympic Games had rowed in the Race.
The Boat Race – Live is simulcast in HD on BBC One HD on Freesat channel 108, Freeview channel 50, Sky channel 143 and Virgin Media channel 108 from 3.45-5.45pm on Saturday, 26th March.
