Sky and ESPN have announced the first live fixtures of the new Aviva Premiership Rugby Union season.
ESPN have announced a line up of 13 ties throughout September and October, kicking off with London Irish against Saracens at Twickenham on Saturday, September 4 at 2pm. Saracens are due to feature in a further three matches in the first two months, at home to Sale Sharks, Northampton Saints and Leicester Tigers. This is the first of ESPN’s three year deal for exclusive rights to broadcast 43 live matches per season through to the 2012/13 season.
ESPN plans to cover many of its 43 matches each season on-site at grounds themselves. From a custom-built set, all pre and post-match discussion and analysis will come live from the game itself, capturing the environment and adding a new dimension to broadcast coverage of the Guinness Premiership.
Jeroen Oerlemans, Vice President, TV Channels Europe, Middle East and Africa, said: “ESPN is committed to capturing the competitive atmosphere and fans of English club rugby, while being true to guiding principles of the sport. Our planned on-site studio presence is a reflection of that.”
Sky have announced 7 fixtures for September and October, commencing with Northampton Saints against Leicester Tigers at Franklin’s Gardens on Sunday, September 5 at 3pm. Subsequent ties include Harlequins against Northampton Saints on Saturday, September 11 and London Wasps against Leicester Tigers on Saturday, September 18.
Martin Turner, executive producer for Rugby Union at Sky Sports, said: “We have great matches, excellent talent and every Premiership Rugby match we show will be in amazing high definition. Add to that a jam-packed season from the European and international levels and it’s a fantastic schedule to enjoy on Sky Sports.”
