Wales and England will kick off the 2011 Six Nations in the Championship’s first Friday night curtain-raiser in a game to broadcast live on BBC One on 4 February.
Both Wales and England will be looking to get the tournament off to a good start, with confidence and momentum always even more important in a World Cup year.
Wales will be looking to rediscover that winning feeling, having not won any of their last seven matches. Meanwhile, Martin Johnson’s England showed glimpses of class in the autumn internationals, most notably beating old rivals Australia, but will need to reproduce that form more consistently.
The Friday night move has caused some controversy amongst fans, however Six Nations chiefs are keen to continue the experiment because it brings in a wider television audience and other commercial rewards.
A BBC spokesman said: “The Six Nations committee decide on the schedule of the championship, and it was their choice to have this Friday night fixture, but the BBC is happy to support it.
“The Friday night matches have proved successful over the last two years, with over five million viewers tuning on both occasions.”
John Inverdale will introduce live coverage from the Millennium Stadium as the 2011 Six Nations gets under way.
