As a pre-cursor to the 2011 Rugby World Cup, a series of warm-up games are taking place featuring the home nations throughout August, live on Sky Sports and BBC Sport.
On Saturday 6 August, BBC Two will broadcast live coverage of the World Cup warm-up match between Scotland and Ireland from Murrayfield. Ireland won this fixture 21-18 in this year’s Six Nations although, in truth, Ireland’s victory should have been a lot more comfortable. Having ended their campaign on a high by denying England the Grand Slam, Declan Kidney’s side will be keen to reproduce that form ahead of the World Cup.
Scotland are more than capable of upsetting the form book having beaten World Champions South Africa at Murrayfield less than a year ago. Scotland v Ireland is on BBC Two on Saturday 6 August at 2pm (kick-off 2.15pm).
BBC Sport will also screen Ireland v France, Wales v Argentina & Scotland v Italy on Saturday 20 August 2011.
England’s hugely successful 2010 season culminated in a hard fought, victorious Six Nations campaign, and the rejuvenated side now have their sights set firmly on glory in this year’s World Cup in New Zealand. As a key part of their preparation, Martin Johnson’s side will lock horns with Wales at Twickenham on Saturday 6 August with the return game taking place at the Millennium Stadium a week later, both matches live on Sky Sports.
These two sides last met in the Six Nations in February, with England winning 26-19. England v Wales is live on Sky Sports 1 / HD1 from 1.30pm (kick-off 2.30pm), and the return leg on Sky Sports 3 / HD3 on Saturday 13 August from 1.30pm. BBC Three will screen same day highlights of both matches at 7pm. Sky Sports will also screen England’s final warm-up as they travel to Dublin to take on Ireland on Saturday 27 August.
With the prospect of age old rivalries being renewed, these warm-ups will be an opportunity to see how the players are shaping up in their bid to secure a place in the World Cup squads who will be looking for glory in New Zealand this autumn.
