The 2011 Heineken Cup Final will be contested by Leinster and Northampton Saints at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on Saturday 21st May, with live coverage on Sky Sports 1 / HD1. It will be the sixth time that Cardiff has played host to the showpiece of the European club rugby calendar.
The event will commence with the arrival of the trophy by helicopter into Cardiff Bay where a symbolic handover by Raphael Ibanez, representing Paris 2010, to Ieuan Evans, representing Cardiff 2011, will take place.
The Saints are set to face Leinster at the Millennium Stadium for their first Heineken Cup final in 11 years – since they won the tournament back in 2000. Northampton Saints booked their place following a dominant 23-7 defeat of Perpignan at stadium:mk. Leinster booked their place in the final of the Heineken Cup for the second time in three years after defeating Toulouse 32-23. Leinster have lifted the trophy once previously in the 2008/09 season.
ERC Chief Executive, Derek McGrath said : “We are delighted to be coming back to Cardiff for the 2011 Heineken Cup final. It is a city that has fully embraced the Heineken Cup ever since our first season when the home team reached the inaugural final,”
He added : “We have already staged five hugely successful finals in the Welsh capital and it will be exciting for all the clubs in the tournament to be aiming to play at the magnificent home of Welsh rugby.”
Coverage of the Heineken Cup Final 2010/11 commences at 4pm on Saturday 21st May on Sky Sports 1 / HD1 with kick-off at 5pm. ITV4 will screen an hour long highlights programme on Monday 23rd May at 6pm.
