The Wyldecrest Park Homes Welsh Open snooker tournament has been given a radical overhaul for 2011, and will run from February 14-20 in Newport. The event will be broadcast by Eurosport and BBC Two Wales.
The early rounds of the competition – from qualifying up until the last-16 – will now feature best-of-seven-frame matches without intervals, rather than the previous best-of-nine frame format. The quarter-finals will then revert to best-of nine frame matches, with the semis best-of-11, and the final best-of 17.
“We are using a range of exciting new formats this season to add variety to our tournaments and give them distinctive features,” said a spokesman for World Snooker.
“We have reduced the number of tables in the Newport Centre arena from three to two, which means that every match can potentially be televised. We will be keen to receive feedback from fans and players on the new format.”
Competing for the title in Wales will be the likes of Ronnie O’Sullivan, Neil Robertson, defending champion John Higgins and home favourites Mark Williams, Matthew Stevens and Ryan Day.

Snooker is a game where a non-stop commentary is quite unnecessary. To shut out the endless chatter I watched yesterdays match with Walden and McGuire using the MUTE button (spoiling the atmosphere) and again today with Lee and Higginson. Please, less talk so that we can enjoy the excellent Eurosport coverage.
