The AEGON Masters Tennis tournament, the traditional season finale to the ATP Champions Tour will take place at the Royal Albert Hall from November 30 – December 5 2010. ITV4 will once again broadcast the competition from the quarter final stage onwards from Friday, December 3.
Former British number one, Tim Henman will come out of retirement for his first competitive match since 2007 to take part in this years tournament. He holds the event in high regard, stating:
‘For me there could be no better place to start to play tennis again than at the Royal Albert Hall in the AEGON Masters Tennis. I always felt that if I started to play tennis again it would be in London first. The event has been going for 14 years, the Royal Albert Hall is such a special place to play and I’ve seen the event grow in stature and the competition get better and better’
Henman will be joined by fellow debutants, former world number one Yevgeny Kafelnikov and two-time Grand Slam finalist Todd Martin at this year’s event.
They’ll take on reigning AEGON Masters Tennis champion Pat Rafter and 2008 winner Cedric Pioline, as well as current ATP Champions Tour leader Thomas Enqvist.
Also competing are 2001 Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic, 2003 Wimbledon finalist Mark Philippoussis, 1987 Wimbledon champion Pat Cash, and Moroccan star Younes El Aynaoui, who debuted at the event last year. Henman’s fellow Brits Greg Rusedski and Jeremy Bates complete the line-up.
The players will be split into four groups of three players to compete in a round-robin format, culminating in the final on Sunday 5 December 2010. Each session will also feature entertaining doubles matches featuring the likes of Mansour Bahrami, Mark Woodforde and Peter McNamara.
Matt Smith will present live coverage on ITV4 from the quarter final stage onwards over the weekend of 3 – 5 December. Commentary will come from Simon Reed, Chris Bradnam and Annabel Croft.
