Wimbledon 2011 live on the BBC

June 17, 2011   ·   30 Comments

BBC Sport will bring exclusive live tennis coverage from Wimbledon as the Championship celebrates it’s 125th anniversary in 2011.

The tournament takes place over 20 June – 3 July and will feature across many BBC platforms including BBC One, BBC Two, Red Button, BBC One HD / BBC HD and for the first time, the finals in 3D.  The BBC has televised Wimbledon since 1937 and today produces over 900 hours of footage for display in 159 different countries. Across BBC One, Two and the Red Button, the broadcaster will screen full daily coverage across the courts from midday to 9pm.

Six-time champion Roger Federer survived an almighty scare on the opening day last year, recovering from two sets down to eventually beat little-fancied Alejandro Falla of Colombia.  This year, defending champion Rafael Nadal will start proceedings on Centre Court. Nadal is aiming for a third Wimbledon crown this year and few would bet against the formidable top seed.

Britain’s Andy Murray will also be hoping to replicate his recent form after winning the warm-up tournament, the Aegon Championship from Queen’s.  Murray was beaten in the semi-final of last years tournament, to the eventual winner, Rafael Nadal.

The BBC team once again includes a line-up of ex-champions and industry experts. Sue Barker will present live daytime and evening coverage on BBC One and BBC Two. The daily highlights show, Today At Wimbledon, will be presented by John Inverdale on BBC Two at 8pm each weekday. This year the team will again include former world No. 1 and Wimbledon champion Lindsay Davenport.

Lindsay will be part of a line-up including: Tim Henman, John McEnroe, Boris Becker, Pat Cash, John Lloyd, Greg Rusedski, Andrew Castle, Tracy Austin, Virginia Wade, Mark Petchey, David Mercer, Barry Davies, Mark Cox, Simon Reed, Andrew Cotter, Nick Mullins, Chris Bradnam, Matt Chilton, Liz Smylie, Sam Smith, Jo Durie, Jason Goodall, Louise Pleming, Paul Hand and Ron McIntosh. Reporters onsite adding daily colour to the Championships are Garry Richardson, Rishi Persad, Sonali Shah and Phil Jones.

As well as coverage on BBC One, BBC Two and the BBC One HD and the BBC HD channel, viewers will be able to follow the Championships via BBC Online, which is streaming all the live action direct to viewers’ PCs and offering live text commentaries via the mobile service.

BBC Red Button will offer a choice of up to six live matches, plus a highlights service and replays of the top matches. Viewers will also be able to switch between commentary and no-commentary options on selected live matches. When there is coverage on BBC One and BBC Two, Freeview will offer a choice of up to three matches. A digital text service will also be available with news, results and score updates. A match highlights package will also be available once play has finished each day.

BBC iPlayer will be offering up to two full matches every day of the tournament. Today At Wimbledon will also be available on demand from BBC iPlayer.

Wimbledon 2011 is simulcast on the BBC HD channel – the BBC’s High Definition channel available through Freesat 109, Freeview 54, Sky 169 and Virgin 187. BBC One coverage is simulcast in HD on BBC One HD on Freesat 108, Freeview 50, Sky 143 and Virgin 108.

I too have seen the gentleman in the Stetson hat sitting there for at least 20 years of Wimbledon. I would imagine he is there to usher in the players guests, but WHO is he ?!!!
Can anyone tell me how to contact the TV team? Look it up on the BBC website and it is for Australian Open 2009 !!
I particularly want to comment on the commentators – particularly now, the Roddick/Hannescu match Wed evening. I would like John Lloyd in particular, along with Chris Bradnam I think it is, to PLEASE SHUT THE BLAZES UP !! It is non-stop verbal diahorroea from Lloyd. He always makes negative
comments constantly, and constantly saying ‘why doesn’t he…..?’. ‘I don’t understand why he doesn’t…….’. Constantly teaching, teaching, instead of giving a proper commentary, with some silences ! Particularly during the beginning of serve. Lloyd is a pain in the neck, and Bradnam too.

I wish just one of the players would say Thank you to the ball boy/girl when they grab the towel after every point.I am sure the greats like Agassi, McEnroe and Connors never had this silly habit.

Oh so do I! It seems so rude. I wrote to the All England Club many years ago about it. The reply was that the ball boys and girls didn’t mind and were honoured ! I bet he didn’t ask them.
Sad to say, Agassi, McEnroe and Connors were just the same. Arthurv Ashe was the gentleman. I started interest in tennis to watch, in 1972 just when Bjorg arrived on the scene. So I missed the Golden Age of Laver starting his triumphs earlier, but dud see him, and loved Rosewall, Newcombe, the 2 Macs – then of course Connors and Nastase, and the arrival in 1977 of McEnroe and that Golden Age…….and on to Federer and Nadal and count myself so fortunate to have won in the Ballot the first time ever, in 2008 and saw that Classic match between Federer and Nadal!
Glorious tennis !! The Golden eras continue !

A decade or two ago or was it three an American atomic submarine made an historic journey under the North Pole ice cap. Anticipating horrendous mental sickness with the crews, the authorities employed three psychiatrists to handle the expected malaise. They were not disappointed. Every morning a queue of sailors stood in the corridor outside of the medics surgeries. A state of desperation existed within the crew to unload their mental turmoils.
The second and repeated voyage was achieved without any problems whatsoever. They left the shrinks on the shore which told the crew there was nothing to be concerned about.
I just wonder if Wimbledon did not have a posse of trainers on hand we would not have to tolerate these never ending delays due to these mysterious injuries.

Dear Wimbledon Team. I have watched Wimbledon for as long as I can remember. Why don’t the players smile anymore. Why don’t they look like they are enjoying themselves. Murray looks like he has been sent to play by his mother and does not really want to be there. The Williams sisters had faces as long as kites. I like to see players engage with the crowds who have taken the trouble to go and watch them. Whatever happened to GLEE when winning a game, why do all winning gestures have to be aggressive.
The LTA really should consider doing something about the shrieking women players, its awful. The quality of tennis has changed immeasurably, what a shame it has lost its fun element in the process.

A long preamble Alexander, but you get there in the end and I do so agree. How is the players are almost screaming in agony – and then continue they match ?!!
And Jean, I do so agree with what you say. I too wish we could see more joy and glee as you put it. The aggression of course was started by Jimbo, and followed by Mac. The 2 very worst ones today with aggressive screaming out punching the air, are Murray and Djokovic.
Djokovkic looks as if he is carrying on the war which was in his country – yet he is full of FUN if you watch him on YouTube. But Murray is a lost cause – his ghastly letterbox wide open mouth as he shrieks (and Djokovic and Hewitt are the same open mouthed yelling when they win a point). Murray’s ranting and raving to his team, and himself, his monotonous one tone of voice when he gives an interview, just whining all the time. A most unpleasant public person, and it
doesn’t bother me if he never wins Wimbledon.
The LTA ask the women to stop shrieking and grunting ?!! It’ll never happen. Nor will it make any difference that Wimbledon’s Ian Ritchie has said it’s not on. Any of the official bodies make no difference whatsoever. The coaches encourage it as do parents. Look at the 9 year old Portuguese girl-wonder on YouTube! She is a disgrace with her shrieking, at HER early age.
As for Schiovone with her DOUBLE shriek…..
The LTA should BAN it completely. But all these bodies have been asked to demand it over many years. They won’t.
The same as the BBC – they won’t stop their commentators from their verbal diahorroea neither will Eurosport for the French and US and Australian Open – the BBC being too mean to show these events. Thank heavens for ‘free’ Eurosport in my Sky package as I don’t have Sky Sports as I don’t like sport AT ALL, except for my wonderful tennis.
So all we can do is rant and rave on this and any other ‘Comments’ site. No one except ourselves ever reads them. Not Ian Ritchie ( I would be delighted to be corrected!! IF IF he did dome thing about the shrieking women. Not the LTA – Tim Henman has now turned into a grey-suit unfortunately – and certainly not the BBC. And certainly not the coaches, nor the players themselves. So we rant and rave to relieve our feelings. It won’t do any good tho – it won’t alter any situation !

Many thanks indeed for telling us the man in the Stetson is the longest serving steward at Wimbles! I’m not surprised he is, as I have been watching for 40 yrs next yr and he’s always there.
I wonder what he looked like in 1972!!
I shall now go and read about him via google !

Ooooops !,,,, A HUGE mistake on my part !
Just watched David Spearing interviewed on YouTube via google – and he has been the steward there only for the last 12 yrs !
I could have sworn he’d been there all the years I have been watching. Goodness – 12 yrs makes it 1999! I would have sworn he was there in the Connors/ Bjorg/McEnroe era !!

Please bbc commentators stop referring to Henman Hill as Murray Mount and making suggestions the name should be changed. How could we insult Tim Henman in this way he carried the flag for so many years and with dignity and a perfect roll model for our youngsters. Never used bad language on a regular basis on court and unlike Murray played Davis Cup for his country on a regular basis. No one could wish for a British Champion more than me preferrably by someone who is proud to be British. How could we think of renaming Henman Hill you cannot honour someone by naming the hill after him and then take it away to give it to the first person to come along with potential. Henman Hill should always be Henman Hill.

One thing I would say is that the Beeb need to look again at the scheduling of ‘Today at Wimbledon’.

It’s scheduling at 8pm on BBC Two is just not a realistic time given that live play runs much later into the evening than that. How many times in the last week did it go out at the scheduled time ?

Just my little moan. Oh and it’s at 11.20pm tonight, BBC Two apparently.

I totally agree David about Today at Wimbledon, not only very late instead of ridiculously early at 8pm, but it was only 27 mins long tonight ! AND played down the fantastic match between Nadal and del Potro ! And their injuries.

Bring back Des and Gerry when, I seem to remember, Today was regularly on at 10pm but that was when the news was st 9pm.

But definitely they need to have Today on after 9pm or 9.30pm when all the matches have finished !
And I agree with Marjorie too – never ever change the name of Henman Hill !!!!!

Having tried to watch the tennis today, and other days, i am fed up with the grunting of the tennis players, please stop them it spoils the tennis.

Please bbc, can you send me your e-mail address, as the one shown on television bbc.co.uk/wimbledon does not work.

Tennis players should not play if they have to make all that noise. Fine the players.

So i suppose that if it stays, less tennis will be watched. Especially in our house!!!!!

Can’t they stop the shrieking, screaming and shouts for each shot? The viewers love the game and it’s being spoilt by unsporting vocal intrusions. I am watching the Ladies final where one player is screaming at each shot – it’s to painful to listen to! luckily I can turn down the sound – it’s the only way I can put up with such unnecessary unsporting screaming. I think players should be penalised for over use of this blight on the wonderful sport of Tennis.

I was actually at Wimbledon yesterday to seethe Ladies Semi Finals.
‘Ladies’ they are not. Azarenka with her prolonged double scream is far worse than Sharapova. Fortunately they were not playing each other and kept hoping that BOTH of them would not win their matches, otherwise they would have been playing each other in the Final today. So very glad Kvitova won against Azarenka yesterday, and had hoped Sharapova would be beaten. Azarenka has told the press I believe, that when young she was weak and was told to shriek out like that to put more force into the ball. She added she is used tomplsying like that and will never stop it. She also walks onto Centre Court chewing gum, ear plugs in her ears moving her head in time to the no doubt rubbish pop music she is listening to, and never looks around her surroundings. She obviously has no respect for Centre Court and Wimbledon, is arrogant, and thinks she knows everything and no one is going to tell her what to do. If coaches and parents let them get away with such behaviour, saying ‘It relaxes her’ what hope have we, the paying public, to make them change ? Especially when even Ian Ritchie, Wimbledon’s new chairman or something, and the LTA won’t FORCE them to stop by fining them heavily for each grunt and shriek. It ruins the tennis ever since Monica Seles appeared on the scene shrieking like a banshee. A huge fine, and/or docking a point for every shriek, is the only thing which will stop them. Wimbledon and the LTA haven’t the guts to do this as it would cost them money one way or another. If there are any typing errors here, it is because this small box won’t allow me to scroll back up to the top to check.

who is the lady who anchors the world feed coverage? She doesn’t commentate on the matches just talks when the players are warming up. She’s being doing it for at least the last 5 years. English accent, probably a BBC employee
