ITV4 are to screen a series of four football specials looking back at some of the greatest, most extraordinary and sometimes controversial goals in the history of the game.
One of the earliest, from the 1970 World Cup final in Mexico, is regularly called the greatest team goal ever. Brazil were already 3-1 up against Italy when a sweeping move involving Pele and Jairzinho was beautifully finished off by the Brazilian captain Carlos Alberto.
16 years later, the World Cup was back in Mexico and England faced Argentina in the quarter-final. Diego Maradona had already scored the infamous ‘Hand of God’ goal before he picked the ball up in his own half and dribbled around five England players before shooting past goalkeeper Peter Shilton and scoring what was later voted Goal of the Century on the Fifa website.
England thought that they were going to get revenge in the 1998 World Cup finals when 18-year-old Michael Owen scored an incredible goal, but the game ended 2-2 and Argentina triumphed on penalties.
Another Argentinian, Ricky Villa, scored after a memorable dash through the Manchester City defence to win the FA Cup for Tottenham in 1981.
Other notable goals featured are Michael Thomas’s last-minute winner which gave the 1989 League title to Arsenal, and Denis Law’s for Manchester City, which helped relegate his former club Manchester United on the last day of the season.
Narrated by Clive Tyldesley, ’20 Goals That Shook the World’ will be broadcast on ITV4 at 9pm on Tuesday 20 September.
The programme will be followed by ’20 Managerial Appointments That Shook the World’ on Tuesday 27 September on ITV4 . This fascinating programme charts the ups and downs of some of the most notorious appointments including one of the most famous of them all – Brian Clough’s troubled forty-four days in charge of Leeds United in 1974. Other managers featured include Don Revie, Kevin Keegan, Diego Maradona and Jackie Charlton.
’20 Referee Decisions That Shook the World’ is the 3rd programme at 9pm on Tuesday 4 October as Peter Drury counts down the referee decisions that stunned the world of football.
The final programme of the series, ’20 Football Games That Shook the World’ is on Tuesday 11 October at 9pm on ITV4.
